In the early 1700s, Pittsboro was a small, unassuming town in the middle of North Carolina. Then, in 1722, the General Assembly of North Carolina met in New Bern and moved the state capital to Pittsboro. This made Pittsboro the most crucial town in the state, and it remained the capital until 1792, when Raleigh was chosen as the new capital. Pittsboro flourished during its time as the capital. Many important buildings were constructed, including the state’s first courthouse and jail.
